On 17 October 2019, the European Court of Human Rights decided, in the context of the case “López Ribalda and Others v. Spain ”, that the use of hidden video surveillance cameras, without prior and express employees information, in a time-limited manner and following legitimate and reasonable suspicions of disciplinary offenses likely to constitute criminal conduct, did not violate the privacy rights of the employees.
The decision was made by reference to Community and Spanish law and was not unanimous as it received fourteen votes in favor and three against.
